The Comedone Extractor Tool Is Great For Removing Blemishes Without Damaging Skin
Of all the products and devices on the market claiming to offer a foolproof way to clear up unsightly skin blemishes, the comedone extractor is one that really does work. A comedone extractor is a small stainless steel implement, a little bigger than a pair of tweezers. Each comedone extractor has a small metal loop on both ends which can be used to extract blackheads. Blackheads are created when skin pores become clogged with dead skin cells. The dead skin cells react with oxygen from the surrounding air, and turn black, hence the name “blackhead”. The metal loops on a comedone extractor are designed to unclog the pore without further exposing it to oxygen and bacteria. This makes it much better than squeezing blackheads, which can leave your skin vulnerable to scarring and infection.
To use a comedone extractor, it is very helpful to first soften and enlarge the pores of your skin with a steam treatment. To do this for free at home, simply boil some water in a pan on the stovetop, drape a towel over your head to catch the steam, and lean over the boiling water. Please be careful not to get too close. Steam is deceptively dangerous and you could really burn yourself! Pay attention to how it feels, and if it starts to get uncomfortable move your head further away from the boiling water. If you have a towel draped over your head to trap the steam, you shouldn’t have to get so close that it is uncomfortable. It should only feel hot and sweaty, not painful. It can be boring to stand with your head over a pot of steam, but if you can stand it, a ten minute treatment would really open and soften your pores.
After you have successfully steamed and opened your pores you are ready to use the comedone extractor. To use this device, first make sure it is absolutely clean and sterile. The whole point of a comedone extractor is to clean out your clogged pores without exposing them to more oxygen or bacteria. So if you are not sure that it is sterile, go ahead and boil it in some hot water for a couple minutes.
Then, match the size of one of the loops to the size of the blemish you wish to remove, and apply downward pressure towards your chin. Do this gently at first, then a little harder if you need. Be careful not to apply so much force that you damage your skin and increase the risk of scarring at the site of the blemish. The goal is to extract the contents of the blemish without tearing at the skin around it.
You can also use the side of the loops on a comedone extractor in a scooping motion to clean out oil and other debris on either side of the nose, around the chin, and even in the ears. When you are done extracting, quickly apply the antiseptic lotion of your choice to eliminate any bacteria that may have accidentally entered your enlarged pores. Also, make sure to wash and sterilize your comedone extractor so that it is ready for next time.
